Composer, drummer, & bandleader John Sturino discusses taking full advantage of the orchestration choices available in a medium-size ensemble, creating interesting instrument blends, and seamlessly tapering between soundscapes, using his piece “Wisconsin,” as performed by his chamber-jazz ensemble BLOW GLOBE.
About the Presenting Artists(s)
John Sturino is an award-winning composer-arranger, drummer-percussionist, and bandleader based in New York City. Sturino is the bandleader, composer, and drummer of BLOW GLOBE, a jazz chamber ensemble that captures the breadth of a full wind orchestra into a tight ten-person unit. Sturino and BLOW GLOBE were the recipients of the Chamber Music America New Jazz Works Commission Grant in 2024. Sturino is active as a composer-arranger, working for ensembles of varying size around the world. Recent commissions and performed works include works for Michael Mayo, The Danish Radio Big Band, Cécile McLorin Salvant, and Philip Dizack. Sturino was awarded the David Baker Prize from the Ravinia Steans Institute for his work ‘A Boundless Design’ (2025), fusing jazz and classical string quartets together for a distinctly refined sound. Sturino performs regularly with the Dizzy Gillespie All Stars Big Band and Small Group, Miho Hazama’s m_unit, Robert Edwards, and the Jihye Lee Jazz Orchestra.
