Saxophonist, composer, and author Mike Tomaro explores how manipulating a piece's unique motifs during the introduction strengthens the arrangement and satisfies both the writer and listener, using his arrangements of All The Things You Are, Giant Steps, and Straight No Chaser.

About the Presenting Artists(s)

Mike Tomaro is the Director of Jazz Studies at Duquesne University. Prior to this, he was a member of the Army Blues, composing and/or arranging much of that group's repertoire. He is a Yamaha Performing Artist and Vandoren Diamond Artist and has worked with a diverse array of artists and groups. Mike's latest recording, “4 Seasons,” on the MCG Jazz label, is the first under his own name in 18 years. In addition to 4 prior recordings of his own, he has appeared on many others, including those of Nancy Wilson, Ann Hampton Callaway, New York Voices, Sheryl Bailey, Smithsonian Jazz Masterworks Orchestra and the Pittsburgh Jazz Orchestra. He has over 200 published compositions and arrangements and his music has been performed by jazz greats and academic institutions around the world. Mike co-authored the textbook “Instrumental Jazz Arranging: A Comprehensive and Practical Guide” (Hal Leonard Publications), with his long-time mentor, Dr. John Wilson.
