Juno-winning composer & pianist Florian Hoefner explores how modern jazz harmony conceals ii-V-I resolutions, and how clever substitutions can unlock complex contemporary chord progressions and sounds.
About the Presenting Artists(s)
Florian Hoefner is a Juno-winning pianist and bandleader, composer, arranger and Assistant Professor of Jazz Studies at Memorial University in St. John's, Newfoundland. Hoefner’s trio record “First Spring” (2019) with Andrew Downing and Nick Fraser was nominated for a 2021 Juno for Jazz Album of the Year: Group. The trio's newest record, "Desert Bloom", was released in June of 2022. With his quartet, the Florian Hoefner Group, he has released 3 albums, the latest “Luminosity” (2016) featured tenor saxophonist Seamus Blake. As a composer, Hoefner’s work has been performed by ensembles including Subtone, Peter Kronreif Wayfarers, Iris Trio, Lucerne Jazz Orchestra, Till Brönner, and the Danjam Orchestra.
