Grammy-nominated composer Rich DeRosa explains how the colors of the woodwind section are much more diverse and require special care, as compared to traditional big band instrumentation using his piece “Pine Needles”, from his new album “Keep Swingin’ - the Music of Charlie Banacos” in today’s mini-lesson.

About the Presenting Artists(s)

Rich DeRosa is a drummer, arranger, Grammy-nominated composer, and Director of Jazz Composition and Arranging at the University of North Texas. Since 2012, he has conducted and arranged for the prestigious WDR Big Band in Cologne, Germany, and served as the band’s chief conductor from 2014-2016. Recent recording collaborations with the band feature Ron Carter, Garry Dial & Dick Oatts, and Richie Beirach. He has also arranged and conducted music for Wynton Marsalis and the Lincoln Center Jazz Orchestra, featuring Toots Thielemans, Willie Nelson, Norah Jones, and Veronica Swift among others.
