Legendary bassist and composer Rufus Reid walks us through how he transformed his big band piece “Whims of the Blue Bird” into the quintet version on his 2003 album “The Gait Keeper”.

Rufus Reid, legendary bass player, bandleader, composer, and co-founder of the Jazz Studies & Performance Program at William Patterson University. He has toured and recorded with Eddie Harris, Nancy Wilson, The Thad Jones & Mel Lewis Jazz Orchestra, Dexter Gordon, J.J. Johnson, Art Farmer, Stan Getz, Kenny Burrell, and Kenny Barron, among countless others. Reid’s book, ‘The Evolving Bassist’, continues to be recognized as the industry standard, definitive bass method. As a composer, Reid’s 2014 big band album “Quiet Pride – The Elizabeth Catlett Project” was nominated for Best Large Jazz Ensemble, and Best Instrumental Composition for ‘Recognition’ (the first movement of the suite) at the 57th GRAMMY Awards.
